Language: Bahasa Malay is the national language, but the different peoples still retain their own languages. English is widely spoken.

Passports & Visas: A full British passport, which is machine readable and valid for six months beyond your return date is required.

Health: Vaccinations may be required and are strongly recommended. Your GP will be able to provide you with specific advice on the destinations in your itinerary.

Best time to travel: Malaysia has a tropical climate where the temperatures fluctuate between 25ºC-35ºC. Kuala Lumpur and the west coast can be visited year round but the driest and sunniest months are December-March, whereas the east coast is at its best during March-October. Throughout Malaysia humidity can be high, and showers occur year-round, although often they clear up as quickly as they arrive.

Visit/Heritage charge: A “visit” or “heritage” charge is payable locally towards the upkeep of the UNESCO World Heritage sights. The fee applies to all hotels in Penang and will be levied per room per night as follows: MYR3.00 (approx. £0.60p) per room per night. This is payable locally.

Malaysia Tourist Tax: A tourism charge is payable from Aug 17 and payable locally at all hotels throughout Malaysia (in addition to the Penang heritage charge and Langkawi Tourism Promotion Fee) and is levied per room per night as follows:-
RM5.00 (approx £0.90) for stays in 3* hotels
RM10.00 (approx £1.80) for stays in 4* hotels
RM20.00 (approx £3.60) for stays in 5* hotels

Langkawi Tourism Promotion Fee: A Tourism Promotion Fee of MYR5.00 (approx £.85p) per room per night is payable locally.
