Pyin Oo Lwin 1 night
Monywa 1 night

Day 1 Mandalay/Pyin Oo Lwin: Depart from your city centre hotel in Mandalay and travel by road to Pyin Oo Lwin (approx 1½ hours drive). On arrival sightseeing for the rest of the day is by horse-cart and begins just east of the town at the Peik Chin Caves, a large Hindu-Buddhist shrine adorned with modern Buddha images and models of Myanmar’s most famous pagodas. Continue to the Botanical Gardens, which feature large flowerbeds, natural forest, rose gardens and an orchid house. Other sights include the Purcell Tower, situated near the entrance to the town, which was a gift from Queen Victoria; the Church Of The Immaculate Conception and Pwe Kauk Waterfall.

Day 2 Pyin Oo Lwin/Monywa: Depart by road and then board a ferry to cross the Chindwin River before continuing westwards towards the Pow Win Daung caves by open jeep. Pow Win Daung Mountain is home to a series of caves nestled in the hillside along a path and contain Buddha images and well preserved murals that date from the 14th-16th centuries. Visit Shwe Ba Taung Paya, with shrines carved into the hillside decorated with elaborate mosaics and Buddha images. Overnight in Monywa, the second biggest town in Upper Myanmar which serves as a major trade centre for agricultural produce from the surrounding Chindwin Valley.

Day 3 Monywa/Bagan: Today’s explorations begin with a visit to the Thanboddhay Pagoda, where every spare surface, inside and out, is covered with almost 600,000 miniature Buddha images. You will then discover one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Myanmar, the Shwe Gu Ni Paya, then see the magnificent Reclining Buddha, perched atop a hill, with spectacular views across the plain. Drive from Monywa to Pakkoku, stopping en route at Ma-U village for a short walk and visit to a family workshop to see how incense sticks are made. Travel onwards to Ah Neint (also known as Thone Pan Hla village), home to over 130 stupas and temples from the 17th century Nyaung Yan period. Continue by boat from Pakkoku to Bagan where your tour concludes.
